Description: "At Mud Tank much of the original magnetite in the outcrops has been converted to hematite ie. martite. In many cases the replacement is incomplete and the martite often retains some magnetism due to the presence of residual magnetite. The martite occurs in situ in the carbonatite as formless bodies up to 30cm or more across. No crystals were observed enclosed in the carbonatite itself, although what first appeared to be magnetite 'crystals' occur abundantly in the surface soils adjacent to the outcrops. Large bodies of martite, found in the carbonatite or as floaters in the soil near the outcrop, were observed to break evenly along four directions of weakness parallel to the octahedron (111), producing a variety of regular shapes all based on the octahedron form. These shapes are identical in size and habit to the 'crystals' scattered over the surface."
