The Eastern Desert is the section of the Sahara Desert east of the Nile River, between the river and the Red Sea. It extends from Egypt in the north to Eritrea in the south and also comprises parts of Sudan and Ethiopia.

More than 110 gold deposits and occurrences are known from the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Ancient Egyptians(4,000 years B.C.) discovered most of these deposits and exploited the topmost part in many of them. In all big gold mines, simple Pharaonic tools of gold sieving and separation are found. Gold exploitation from major gold deposits lasted from Pharaonic times, Roman through Islamic and recent times.[1]
