Region drained by the Mera and Liro rivers and their tributaries. It can be divided into three parts which branch from the confluence of these rivers near Chiavenna, the main town of the region.

The northern part is the Spluga Valley (San Giacomo Valley), drained by the Liro River and connected with Switzerland through the Spluga (Splügen) Pass, whose territory is included in the municipalities of Madesimo, Campodolcino, and San Giacomo Filippo.

The eastern branch is the Italian part of the Bregaglia Valley (municipalities of Chiavenna, Piuro, and Villa di Chiavenna), drained by the Mera River (named Maira in Switzerland), whose Swiss part extends to the Maloja Pass (see http://www.mindat.org/loc-29365.html).

The southern part, known as Lower Valchiavenna or Lower Mera Valley, follows the Mera watercourse, from the confluence point at Piano di Chiavenna to Lake Mezzola and then, across Pian di Spagna, until its confluence with Lake Como. Its territory, comprising the municipalities of Mese, Prata Camportaccio, Gordona, Samolaco, Novate Mezzola, and Verceia, includes the Forcola and Bodengo valleys on the right side, and the Codera and Ratti valleys on the left side.
