The village of Temagami lies about 97 kms (60 miles) north of North Bay and about 480 kms (300 miles) north of Toronto by way of Highway 11. Located on the northeastern arm of Lake Temagami, where Highway 11 meets its most eastern shore. Temagami is situated on the southern boundary of strathy Township, where it borders with Strathcona Township.

The name Temagami means "deep clear water" and is of Ojibwe origin. The name was adopted in 1906 and was spelled Timagami until 1968.

Strathy Township holds a area of about 90 square kilometers. Renowned as a popular tourist destination worldwide, the area is noted for its Old Growth Forest, comprised of 250 year old red, white and jack pine trees. A forest reserve surrounding Lake Temagami has been designated to preserve the precious ecosystem of this area. The Temagami area holds claim to some of the highest elevations in Ontario, which includes the highest, known as the Ishpatina Ridge.

Temagami and Strathy Township share a rich history in mining. Claims were staked as early as 1900, within the township. Some were developed into production, such as the Sherman Mine, located just west of Temagami. The village of Temagami North was originally designated for workers of the Sherman Mine.
