- Ocorrências de Ouro - disseminadas e filonianas ligadas a distintas formações vulcano-sedimentares
- Ocorrências de Ouro - filonianas, stockwerks e massas silicificadas em metassedimentos paleozóicos, afectados por cisalhamentos, carreamentos ou desligamentos tardios.
- Génese: epigenética, hidrotermal. Singenética, vulcano-sedimentar ou metamórfica. Paragénese As-Au (Pb-Zn).
- Descrição geológica: estruturas filonianas e pequenas massas, por vezes com apófises, de quartzo brechóide e subverticais. Camadas argilosas negras, em antiformas menores, com veios de quartzo aurífero centimétricos interestratificados, ricos em arsenopirite de baixa temperatura e pirite. Existem 3 tipos de mineralizações com idade D1/D3: (1) estratiforme, com pirite e rara calcopirite associada a quartzo, paralela a estratificação; (2) disseminada, com pirite impregnada na rocha; (3) fissural, só com pirite ou associada a quartzo e clorite, de origem nitidamente hidrotermal.
Geologia local: predominam as alternâncias de quartzitos e xistos do Arenigiano, no flanco oriental do anticlinal de Valongo, provavelmente afectadas pela zona de cisalhamento de Santa Justa (D1/D3).
Geologia regional: Arenigiano.

O Couto Mineiro das Banjas localiza-se no flanco leste do Anticlinal de Valongo e está inserido na Faixa Auroantimonífera do Douro. É constituído por seis concessões (Poço Romano, Ribeiro da Castanheira, Vale do Braçal, Vale Fundo, Serra de Montezelo, Vargem da Raposa e Serra do Facho), estendendo-se desde a Sobreira (Concelho de Paredes) até Melres (Concelho de Gondomar).
Nesta zona mineira foram explorados Chumbo (Pb), Antimónio (Sb) e Ouro (Au). Os filões de quartzo aurífero foram intensamente explorados pelos Romanos, do que, ainda hoje, são testemunhos os importantes desmontes, a céu aberto e subterrâneos, e o espólio encontrado. Durante os finais do século XIX até meados do século passado foi uma importante zona de produção de antimónio, extraindo-se muitas vezes o ouro como subproduto.
Para além de todos os trabalhos de exploração que aqui se encontram, pode ainda observar-se o que resta das antigas instalações das Minas das Banjas onde funcionaria a lavaria e, onde se realizaria o tratamento do minério.
