Caverna de la Leonera

Elevation: 750 m. asl.
The cavern of the Salado II or the lion's den is located north of the Salado I, at coordinates 38°07'S, 69°56'W at an altitude of 750 meters above the sea level and is developed at the level of gypsum-anhydrite of the Troncoso upper member of the Huitrín formation.

The cavern presented a Meridian direction with northward-dipping. Accessed by a slope of clasts and sand that leads to a room of rectangular design, in which stands out the existence of bodies of water which could correspond to dolines or sinkholes. A short ascending gallery to the left (to the NW of the room), connects the posterior sector of the cavity via a strong slope and large blocks. The various rooms and galleries have a section of funnels being in some cases irregular in profile and asymmetric, with a tendency to be parallel to the Meridian. The Eastern walls are irregular and more oblique than the Western walls, which are straight and vertical. That is because the cave is located in a structural area of sub-vertical and contested strata to the West, where the dissolution of the anhydrite bank produced the collapse of the limestone stromatoliths and the compact sandstone from the lower section of the Member Troncoso. The forms of erosion are type scallops and gouges (karren) on the wall, that give a profile "rosariforme to arrosariado", groundwater pipes, chimneys upward (vertical pipes) and holes (pockets). In the vaults, dehydration of anhydrite, form parabolic profiles.

The concretions are gypsum and consist of stalactites ranging from macaroni, thin, transparent and empty, to well-developed forms of conical section, irregular, helical, etc.; These forms consist of a central conduit and concentric structure.
