Cave di gneiss di Crodo, Crodo, Provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piemonte, Italia
Minerals are found inside Alpine fissures in gneiss of the Antigorio nappe.
Gneiss quarries are located on both right (Rencio-Molinetto area) and left (Case Gianzana-Alpiano-Marlogno area) sides of Antigorio Valley, S of Crodo, and produce a dimension stone commercially known a βSerizzo Antigorioβ.
Gneiss quarrying in the municipal territory of Crodo begun in the 1930s. According to the survey of Corpo Reale delle Miniere of Turin, three quarries were in operation in 1934: Rencio quarry, operated by Carlo Negri; βAl piano di fuoriβ quarry, operated by Romolo Pirovano and Enrico Pelganta; βMolinetto e Castelloβ quarry, operated by Federico Gionzini. In 1966, there were only three active quarries (i.e.: Rencio Castello quarry, operated by Maffioli company; Rencio Molinetto quarry, operated by Gionzini company; Rencio Superiore quarry, operated by Negri company), but in the coming years the number of active quarries sensibly increased. In 1977, seven quarries were in activity: Rencio Molinetto quarry, operated by Ezio Gionzini; Molinetto quarry operated by Angelo Grigioli; Rencio Castello quarry, operated by Graniti Maffioli; Rencio Superiore quarry, operated by Gianfranco Pesenti; Al Piano Inferiore quarry, operated by Fratelli Moro; Mozzio quarry, operated by Partorenti & Marabini; Al Piano Superiore, operated by Angelo Crusignani. In 2007, the number of active quarries amounted to eight (Casaccia Inferiore, Casaccia Superiore, Case Gianzana, Cusina, Marlogno, Rencio Molinetto, and Rencio Superiore). At the beginning of 2015 the authorised active quarries are: Rencio Molinetto quarry, operated by Cave Marmi Vallestrona S.r.l.; Rencio Superiore quarry, operated by βNegri Carloβ company; Casa Gianzana quarry, operated by Geograniti S.r.l.; Marlogno Superiore quarry, operated by Pro-De S.r.l.
