Cave di gneiss di Formazza, Formazza, Provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piemonte, Italia


Minerals are found inside Alpine fissures in gneiss of the Antigorio nappe.

The gneiss quarries, that are located in the lower Formazza Valley and can be grouped into Foppiano, Antillone, and Chiesa quarries, produce a dimension stone commercially known as β€œSerizzo Formazza”.

The Foppiano gneiss quarries, located near the village of Foppiano, include:
- Bort quarry, NW of Foppiano, on the right side of Formazza Valley;
- Ponte Romano quarry, E of Foppiano, on the left side of Formazza Valley;
- Garou quarry, SE of Foppiano in the valley of Rio di Cramec, on the left side of Formazza Valley;
- Sciuena quarry, SE of Foppiano in the valley of Rio di Cramec, on the left side of Formazza Valley;
- Cramec quarry, SE of Foppiano at an elevation of 1370-1570 m in the valley of Rio di Cramec, on the left side of Formazza Valley.

The Antillone (Altillone) gneiss quarries, located near the village of Altillone (Antillone) on the right side of Formzza Valley, include:
- Cneila quarry, S of Altillone at an elevation of 1130-1200 m;
- Kighel quarry, ENE of Altillone at an elevation of 1270-1330 m.

The Chiesa gneiss quarries, located near the village of Chiesa, include:
- Bruggi quarry, at an elevation of 1200-1330 m between the villages of Fondovalle and Chiesa, on the left side of Formazza Valley;
- Boschetto (Imboden) quarry, N of Chiesa at an elevation of 1270-1350 m, on the right side of Formazza Valley.
