More than 500 specimens of red or pinkish platy corundums up to 10 cm in diameter, embedded in an amphibolite matrix were found at a locality close to the village of Anavoha in 1997 by 2 French prospectors. The locality is often referred to as Ianavoha, but in the Malagasy language this means "at Anavoha".
