Undoubtedly the richest of the West Cork mining districts, Allihies has a long history of mining and many of the miners later emigrated to Butte, Montana to further their trade once the mines became uneconomic.
The Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland has done extensive work in the area including digging out various adit levels, rebuilding the renowned Man Engine House and acting as the driving force behind the creation of a mining museum in the village.
