Vernon Street defines the west side of Trinity College campus and runs along the top of a ridge underlain by the Jurassic Hampden Basalt, which is exposed in a 10-meter cliff below the street. Trinity Ridge, as this feature is called, was the site of a large trap and sandstone quarry that supplied the city of Hartford with building and paving stone from the mid-1700s to the end of the nineteenth century. Here the basalt and underlying East Berlin Formation dip 18 degrees to the east. Part of the basalt, near the intersection of Vernon and Summit streets is brecciated, with datolite crystallized in the interstices. But the most interesting mineralogical feature is a 0.5-m thick, steeply dipping, N-S oriented, fault-hosted hydrothermal vein cutting the basalt near a staircase that connects Vernon Street to Rock Ridge Park below. The vein mineralogy is mostly barite, with the typical associated quartz, bitumen and copper minerals found in many other veins cutting basalt in the towns further south.

Age: Early Jurassic (174.1 - 201.3 Ma)

Stratigraphic Name: East Berlin Formation

Description: Maroon siltstone, silty and sandy shale, and fine-grained silty sandstone, generally well laminated and commonly well indurated, alternating with dark fissile shale; dolomitic carbonate common in cement, concretions, and thin argillaceous laminae. Local arkose; grades eastward into coarse conglomerate close to eastern border fault. The East Berlin Formation of the Hartford basin contains eight facies: trough cross-bedded sandstones, horizontally stratified sandstones, interbedded sandstones and mudrocks, ripple cross-laminated siltstones, black shales, stratified mudrocks, disrupted shales, and disrupted mudstones. These facies are interpreted as a continental depositional system and are divided into two assemblages. Sandflat/alluvial plain facies assemblage (sandstones and siltstones) is composed of sheet-flood deposits. The lacustrine assemblage (shales and mudrocks) represents a saline lake-playa system (Gierlowski-Kordesch and Rust, 1994).
