A contested region that was occupied by Russian armed forces after the Russia-Georgia War of 2008 and subsequently unilaterally announced its independence from Georgia.

It is still (2017) regarded legally as part of Georgia by the majority of countries worldwide.

As per mindat.org rules on contested regions it is now listed separately from the Georgia hierarchy.
