Amazonite pegmatites with rare Y and Yb minerals at Ploskaya Mountain, situated 2,5 km west of Vyuntspakhk Mt., about 80 km east of Lovozero village and 34 km NNW of Krasnoshchelye settlement.

In 1955, fragments of amazonite pegmatite with gadolinite were discovered in this area. Prospecting works performed during the summer 1956 evidenced various amazonite-bearing pegmatite dykes, including the giant dyke also known as vein No. 19 or Ploskogorskoe deposit (now considered the largest semi-precious amazonite deposit in the world). This 220-m-long vein, ranging in thickness from 8 to 25 m, is located on the western slope of the mountain and consists of quartz, quartz-amazonite-albite, and amazonite zones. The thickness of blocky amazonite zones in the dyke range from 2 to 8 m. Microcline (amazonite) is the main mineral, often intergrown with albite in the form of perthite. Amazonite forms crystals and blocks from 10 cm to 2 m across, varying in colour from blue, greenish-blue to green and grass-green. Quartz, albite, and zinnwaldite are typical rock-forming minerals of the vein; accessory minerals include zircon, fergusonite-(Y), columbite-(Mn), yttrofluorite, and many others.


Plosakaya Mt. is the type locality for hingganite-(Yb) and keiviite-(Yb), two of the few minerals with essential ytterbium; it was the type locality for fluorthalénite (Voloshin & Pakhomovskii, 1997), a species discredited by IMA in 2014 (IMA 14-D) because thalénite-(Y) has been redefined as a F-dominant species.
