The Mertondale 5 Gold Mine is approximately 40 kilometres north-east of Leonora, as an abandoned open pit, 200 metres west of the Leonora-Nambi Road.

It is located in the west branch of the Mertondale Shear Zone. Gold is hosted in a north-south sequence of carbonated-sericite schists, graphitic schists, and quartz-feldspar porphyries. The ore bearing unit is narrow at 5 to 15 metres wide, bounded to the west by chloritised-carbonated basalts, and to the east by quartz-feldspar porphyries, containing up to 50% volume of pyrite, and some graphitic schists also with a high volume of pyrite.

The Footwall contact is well developed with green chlorite-carbonate basalts, moderately to strongly sheared. Sericite is less in here than in the adjacent mylonite zone. The Hanging Wall contact is less well developed, with mixing of the mafics along the contact. The Hanging wall is intensely altered to quartz-feldspar porphyry, with the mineralised package strongly weathered to 100 metres in depth.
