The Songvang Gold Mine is the southern most on the goldfield at 15
kilometres south south-west from the Agnew Hotel. Open pit mining commenced in 2005.
It is located at the contact between a granitic-tonalitic pluton, and the basalitic supercrustal cover. Mineralisation is controlled by two main shear zones, both localised on, and partly cross-cutting the margins of the tonalite intrusion. One shear zone is well exposed along the western wall of the pit, and the other less so on the eastern side of the pit.
The west shear zone dips steeply east, while the east shear zone dips 30 to 40 degrees west, with the two converging at depth.
The shears show strike slip, with earlier reverse movement, suggesting a long and complex history of reactivation. They also show dextral shearing and east north-east to west south-west shortening.
The main lode at Songvang is a shallowly plunging rod like body of gold-pyrite. Mineralisation sits within strongly sheared mafic and tonalite rocks, and associated with enrichment in Ag, Cu, As, Sn, and Bi. The ore assemblage consists of biotite-quartz-chlorite-actinolite-carbonates-titanite-fluorite-pyrite-chalcopyrite. The deposit is unusual due to its strong silver, lead and fluorine components.
