The Orient Well open pit was developed between 1995 to 1997. It is twelve kilometres north of Kookynie, and borders the west side of the Malcolm-Kookynie Road.

A CIP plant, mobile crushing and screen facilities, heap leach facility, 40 person camp, and machinery still remain at the site at the time of writing. The plant also processed ore from the Butterfly pits a short distance to the west, and Puzzle Gold Mine to the south east. After such a long time idle, the plant is likely to be in a state of dis-repair.

JORC estimated resources remain of 21.65 Mt yielding 716 000 ounces. This includes a laterite deposit immediately north of the open pit of 27 000 ounces. Small laterite deposits are also found south-west of the pit.

The geology of the area is poorly understood. More will be included under the Golden Butterfly location. South-east of the pit are north-west to north north-west structures hosting the Grafter-Fortuna-Blevins Find, and Waratah lines of historic workings, all producing small high grade tonnages.

Immediately south of the mine is an active prospector lease and camp, with a few acres of heavily pot marked shallow pits.
