The Fortuna Gold Mine is about 1 kilometre south-west of the Orient Well open pit, 200 metres east of the Malcolm-Kookynie Road, between the road and the railway line. The site consists of a series of shafts and mullock along a 100 metre line trending north-west to south-east.
The original prospectors were J. Spicer, Doe, and S. Watson, who pegged the lease in 1896. This group also developed the Grafter Gold Mine to the south.
The gold bearing reef is iron influenced quartz in a large kaolin formation, interspersed with ironstone stringers. The lode is valued at 5 to 10 dwt.
The mine produced 5193 tonnes of ore for 3693 ounces of gold. This is quite a substantial amount for this prospector field, however little information was found.
