The Katanning Shire is 290 kilometres south-east of Perth, and covers 1518 square kilometres. The only major town in the shire is Katanning itself, which is a regional centre. The population of the shire is 4317 (2012). The economy is based on cereal growing/wheat. Most of the shire is rolling wheat fields.
