A small historic, copper, silver and ?gold mine, situated within quartz veins of the Encounter Bay Granites (late Cambrian), at 'The Bluff' or Rosetta Head, Encounter Bay.
It was reported that copper was discovered on 'The Bluff' in 1863. Shortly afterwards mining commenced for a short period (less than 1yr). The mine was reopened in 1882 and a small amount of payable ore returned, including galena which had now also been found. The lode was reported to be up to 5 foot wide. Again, work was only for a short period. A third attempt to mine this location began in 1899, although there are no records of production.
A newspaper cutting from 1863 states;
"A party of gentlemen have just arrived from Rosetta Head. They have been inspecting the mineral deposits of the Bluff, and but one opinion prevails with respect to the richness of the deposits. It is confidently believed that if the Bluff is properly worked it will turn out the best paying concern in the colony, as, independent of the very large percentage of ore, the facilities for shipment are so great, the jetty being so near, that it is calculated one pound/ton would be the outside cost of getting the stuff to the jetty ready for shipment."
Sometime after 1940, the mine was closed in, signage at the mine site, and an obvious indentation in the side of the hill, are all that remain of this historic mine. It is also, now a part of The Bluff Conservation Park.
