An historic gold mine.
On February 2 1895 the Robinson Gold Mining Company was floated in London with 80 000 pounds capital, to acquire four leases totalling 52 acres, 1.5 miles north of the Kanowna town site. The leases were between the Q.E.D. and Moonlight leads, with the Ballarat group to the south-west.
Crushings started late 1896 at the newly erected 20 head battery. By May 1898 the mine had produced 7657 tonnes of ore for 9471 ounces of gold, averaging 24.7 dwt. 8000 pounds in dividends had been issued.
At this point the mine was condemned by a mining expert, and the company resorted to public crushing for the alluvial miners on the newly discovered leads.
By 1900, this form of income had petered out. Some mining was taking place on the lease, but claims were made the company was under reporting the tonnages, so the gold won in relation looked more positive.
Creditors seized the mine in 1901. The workforce, totalling 50 men, were owed several weeks wages and sued.
The company was reconstructed but with only 6000 pounds working capital, the battery overhauled, and development work commenced at the 200 foot level.
The mine was soon let to tributers, and was worked intermittently for several years. Around 1906, Black, Blatchford and Grut purchased the tailings to be re-processed.
