Bedrock, drill hole walls, tailings and unprocessed/sieved dump piles were analyzed by ChemCam instrument of the Mars Science Laboratory rover; the tool used was LIBS - Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy. The drill holes are 6.5 cm deep.

The composition of one of 3 drill sites (likely the one called Telegraph Peak) is [%]: 31 amorphous phase, 22.2 plagioclase, 11 phyllosilicate(s), 7.8 hematite, 7 augite, 5.7 K-feldspar, 4.4 orthopyroxene, 3.8 pigeonite, 2.5 magnetite, 1.9 forsterite, 1.7 cristobalite, 0.4 quartz, 0.9 ilmenite, 0.2 jarosite. The other two drill sites (Confidence Hills and Mojave) are close in location and thus supposed to have similar composition. This compostion is more rich in Si, Al, and K than the drill sites at the Yellowknife Bay, but less magnesian.
