Historically Christmas Flats was an area, with several named prospector leases. Gold was discovered here by McLellan and Campbell (surnames), and McCahon and party in 1920. Soon eighty leases had been pegged across this small area.

Information on a lease named Christmas Flat (17 acres) was first found in 1941, when New Milano NL took out a one year working option. They held the lease immediately to the south-east, and hoped their lode continued into Christmas Flats.

A modern open pit was developed at the site from 2009 to 2010 by Silver Lake Resources. It is one kilometre north-west of the Daisy-Milano mine. The odd shaped pit is the result of following near surface expressions of the Maranoa, Austin and Haoma lodes. The site of the pit contained several shallow historic workings from the 1920's. Before the pit the most recent major underground mining was in the 1950's, and minor into the 1970's.

The pit follows steep west dipping, north north-west trending porphyritc tonalitic dykes, intruding a sequence of sandstone, polymictic conglomerate and andesite, metamorphosed to chlorite schist, and overlain by pillow basalt and komatiite. This is exposed at the southern end of the pit.

Gold is hosted in narrow quartz veins in chlorite schist at the dyke boundaries. Gold grades are found between 2 to 30 g/t. Extension low angle veins within the dykes contain gold up to 1.0 g/t, and the tonalite itself gold is found up to 0.5 g/t.

The country rock has two foliations, the first gently south-west dipping, and the other steep west south-west dipping. The central tonalitic dyke in the pit is boundinaged, with mineralisation occurring after dyke emplacement.
