Black Hill is a small alluvial gold area. Locating it in the woodland is difficult with many tracks. It is the third track south, if travelling west from the Bulong-Curtin Road and Trans Australian Railway Line Road intersection. The track heads due south for about 5 kilometres, when an east-west cross track is reached. Black Hill is one kilometre west, while the larger Pauline alluvial area is one kilometre east.

A four wheel drive is needed, and evidence suggests both leases are part of an active prospector's camp. Black Hill contains a small east-west trending area of bulldozer scrapings, shallow trenches, and scattered historic shafts. Several more small sites are widely scattered over a several kilometre radius, sometimes reached via faint tracks, and sometimes with no access at all.

The alluvial patch was discovered in 1900, by Henry Smith and Frank Fish. They un-covered the reef, 2 feet wide, and extracted 2000 ounces of specimen stone within a short space of time. Soon eighty men were working the area as an alluvial gold rush. The alluvial miners were either finding slugs or nothing. By 1901, they were on a nearby patch, with gold scattered over a wide area. 100's of ounces were being obtained but we will never know the full amount.

Smith and Fish obtained 7000 pounds worth money wise in a few weeks, within 8 feet of the surface. A shaft was sunk but no gold was found at depth. The lease was re-pegged by Sheehan (surname), but when visited in October 1901, the lease was deserted.

Westhead and Dwyer (surnames) found 500 ounces of specimen stone in 1917, by sinking the shaft further. The following year a few prospecting parties are noted in the area, but gold found was in short supply.

In 1925, Reside and Love (surnames) floated the Black Hill Gold Mining Syndicate, to take over GML 740Y, but no more information was found on this.
