Locality type:

Boorara is 10 kilometres east of Kalgoorlie, and just south of the Nimbus polymetallic mine.

Boorara is described as a structurally complex Archaean gold deposit, with mineralisation in shear zones, and quartz veining of various orientations. It is centred on the regionally significant, north-west to south-east trending Boorara Shear Zone, consisting of ultramafic, dolerite, sediments, and felsic units.

The main host for gold is dolerite, in particular a granophyric zone within this containing high grade gold. In the shear zone gold is hosted at the contact of dolerite with ultramafics in the western section, and sediments with felsic volcanoclastics in the eastern section. Cross cutting and over printing the shear zone and granophyric is auriferous quartz veins, trending north-east, and dipping shallowly north-west.

The quartz ranges from stringers (1-2 cms) to a metre wide, in some areas forming a stockwork. The intersections of the quartz veins and shear zone, form plunging high grade ore shoots. Supergene gold mineralisation is found in the oxidised zone.

Gold is found associated with carbonate-chlorite-silica-sericite-epidote hydrothermal alteration, with pyrite and arsenopyrite.

The site in recent decades has been explored by Western Reefs Limited, Windsor Resources NL, Fimiston Mining NL, Newmont Australia Limited, Newcrest Mining Limited, New Hampton Goldfields Limited, Polymetals (WA) Pty Ltd, and Macphersons. A mine has been mooted for the site over several years, but at the time of writing is yet to eventuate.

Beehive is a prospect one kilometre to the north-west, Dawn 500 metres to the north, and Brindabella 500 metres to the north-east, all just north of the Nimbus access road. Three pits have been conceptually designed for Boorara named Northern Stockwork, Crown Jewell, and Southern Stockwork.

Historic production amounts to 54 731 tonnes of ore for 30 673 ounces of gold, mostly from the Boorara Cataract mine. While historic workings can be seen at the site, no information could be found on the old mine.
