Mullingar is north of the Golden Mile. Here is an area of small historic mines from the late 1890's and early 20th Century, bordering the north-east edge of Kalgoorlie. The area is greatly disturbed, with houses next to the lodes, and possibly over some of them. The old mines bordered what is now the Kalgoorlie-Menzies Road, north of the Mount Charlotte Reservoir, and south of the Hannans Tourist Mine- a collection of historic buildings, mineral specimen display, museum and underground mine tour. A large shallow modern pit occurs east of the road covering such old mines as Sir John and Mount Percy. Little remains of the mines closer to the road, other than some collapsed shafts.

The area was studied in detail by government geologist F.R. Feldtmann in 1912. At the time it was described as low hills covered in laterite, ironstone and clay down to 40 metres. There was a lack of outcrop, with many shallow workings.

Gabbro and dolerite formed the country rock of the Golden Zone line of lode in the western section, including amphibolite, epidiorites, chlorite, zoisite and quartz. This rock was also found in the extreme east. The rock was generally dark greenish to pale grey, depending on the amount of ferromagnesian minerals and feldspar.

Talc-chlorite rocks with some sericite was contained in the central portion of the area, and was the country rock of the Mystery, Smiths and Kapai line of lodes. The rock was greenish grey, and paler than the amphibolites, soft, soapy, medium to fine grained, with more weathered specimens having a brownish olive tint.

Feldspar porphyry dyke like masses intrude the older rocks. This covers a large part of the low lying country in the western portion of the area. The rock is pale grey to slight pinkish, fine grained, hard, gritty, with a blocky structure.

The upper laterite formed pure iron oxide passing down into ferruginous clay with pebbles and laterite grains. It ranged from turgite to limonite, with some gold flakes found in it.

Gold was found in quartose ore, lodes at or near the porphyry/amphibolite junctions, hematite-quartz rocks, quartz veins at right angles to the lodes, alluvial deposits, and ore shoots.

The quartoze lodes formed a series of quartz lenses, slightly more northerly striking than the lodes due to shearing. The ore body was up to 4 feet wide, with richer gold where the lode is wider, showing in the New Reefers, to Hannans North leases, Golden Zone and Star leases half-way to the Napoleon lease. The main body was chiefly chalcedonic silica, the richest gold in the Golden Zone where the country is shattered. There is also a series of north-east striking faults, throwing the lode north-east.

Gold at the contact of amphibolite and porphyry is found on the Belgravia lease, north through Sheba, Lone Hand, Little Wonder and Mystery. Here a fault throws the lode north-east, continuing through the Hyman lease, where gold values are poorer. The oxidised zone shows kaolin with some sericite, with auriferous quartz veins in vughs in ironstone near the eastern wall.
