The Shire of Shark Bay is 25 423 square kilometres, containing a population of 928(2013). It is located on the mid Western Australian coastline, incorporating two peninsulas being the western most point of Australia, and a section inland. The economy is based on tourism, fishing, and the pastoral industry.
There is one town called Denham, with small tourist communities at Monkey Mia and Nanga. The western part of the shire contains the Shark Bay World Heritage Area. This includes at Hamelin Pool the most easily accessible stromatolites, the oldest living fossils in the world. The site also contains a telegraph station museum, and nearby shell beach. The Monkey Mia resort is based on dolphin viewing. Boat tours leave from here to view dugongs. There are a number of scenic sights around the coastline.
The shire contains a now closed salt ponds at Useless Loop, and a worldclass undeveloped mineral sands deposit.
