The Hope Downs 4 Mine accesses mineralised sections of the Dales Gorge and Joffre Members of the Brockman Iron Formation. The mineralisation occurs in four discrete bodies on the limbs of an east-west trending syncline, gently dipping east. On the western side the orebody is bounded to the north and south by the McRae Shale Formation, and on the east side mineralisation occurs down the steeply dipping western limb. Underlying this is the Wittenoom Formation. The country rock is the Hamersley Group banded iron formations, shale, and volcanics of the Brockman Iron Formation, Weeli Wolli Formation, and Wongarra Volcanics. North of the orebody the Hamersley Group is overlain by Tertiary calcrete, 20-40 metres thick. There is a significant north-south trending fault through the orebody in the vicinty of Coondiner Creek.
The mine is 35 kilometres east south-east of the Hope Downs (Hope Downs 1) mine, and accesses four ore bodies. Mining commenced in 2013. The mining camp is some 3 kilometres north of the Great Northern Highway, and mine about 8 kilometres north of the highway. The mine cost 1.2 billion to construct, and produces 15 Mtpa, railed to the port of Dampier.
Joint venture Hancock Prospecting/ Rio Tinto 50/50. The disputes between Hancock Prospecting and Wright Prospecting (See Rhodes Ridge and Hope Downs 1 Mindat localities), has spilled over at times into nearby tenements.
In 2010 Angela Bennett of Wright Prospecting took Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting to court claiming a 50% stake in Hope Downs 4, 5 and 6 prospects. Wright charged Hancock with breach of trust by selling partly the Hope Downs Property without its consent, seeking all profits and compensation.
In 2016, Wright Prospecting, and the descendants of Pilbara prospector Don Rhodes took Hancock Prospecting to court. Wright was claiming Hancock's 50% stake in the Hope Downs 4 Mine, and royalties from the Hope Down 1 Mine. The Rhodes entity claimed 1.25% of royalties from the Hope Downs production.
