Along with the Billjim Mine, two kilometres to the west, Golden Gate was the other major mine in the area, although little information was found.
In 1913, it is reported E. Dunne and A. Mark had taken up the lease, and were producing crushings. The lease is then under option to Consolidated Gold Areas in 1939, who sink a shaft down 40 feet, and conduct exploration work.
In 2015, several short lived shallow pits were developed in the vicinity by Millennium Minerals Limited.
The Golden Gate deposits are hosted by weakly metamorphosed shale, siltstone and sandstone beds, as an east north-east trending sequence. Within this is an array of brittle quartz vein sets. All the gold is hosted in these strongly sheared quartz vein arrays, and shears in the metasediments.
Gold is associated with two zones of quartz veining: 1) north-west to south-east trending, 2) north-east to south-west trending. The reef systems are up to 20 metres wide, and dip steeply by 60 to 70 degrees north-east.
