Messinian gypsum blocks (from which the hamlet of Gessi takes its name) cropping out within the clayey matrix of the Valle Versa Chaotic Complex to the west of Moncalvo. Karst phenomena in this area are attibutable to "subjacent karst", where gypsum is only partially dissected by superficial drainage system. Dissolution phenomena are well developed inside gypsum rocks only above hydrological base-level.
