Iron meteorite, Octahedrite (IIIF, Og)
Find, 1888; 244.5 kg

An iron meteorite (Ni ~7.7%) was found in 1888 in the extreme western part of the county. After several public displays it was eventually purchased by Ward who sold sections to various museums. Underneath the weathered surface, Kamacite lamellae predominate within the sections with abundant Neumann bands. Plessite and taenite (40%) are also prominent. Schreibersite (in several morphologies), troilite, and daubréelite are the most obvious minor accessories.

The two largest masses are held at the Field Museum in Chicago (106 kg) and the University of Arizona State (58 kg). St. Genevieve County is the most massive of the IIIF iron meteorites, a very small iron group with only 9 members.
