Eritrea is a country located in the Horn of Africa, with an extensive coastline along the Red Sea, and includes the Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands.

Eritrea is underlain by Neoproterozoic terranes and Tertiary to Holocene volcanic rocks. Marine sediments of Mesozoic to Holocenic age are exposed in the costal area of the country along the Red Sea.
