An abandoned gold mine in schist-hosted quartz veins.

The original gold discovery at Winnecke in 1902. Fuelled by rash and untrue statements about the riches underground, based only on gold seen on the surface, shares in this syndicate skyrocketed to over 100 pounds each early 1903.

The Cullingworth Prospecting Syndicate is mentioned associated with the mine at this time. They stated it is sited on a hill 50 feet above the plain, with several veins running east-west across the hill, of honeycombed quartz in parts with ironstone and pyrite showing very rich gold. It also states this section is very small, and concludes it is a surface show, and possible payable mine.

Meanwhile South Australian government geologist, H.Y.L. Brown visited. Of the 6 acres lease he states it shows large irregular shaped quartz reefs and veins trending east-west, with other veins diagonal to this. Very limited gold is visible in iron and iron gossan, while the cellular quartz holds very little gold. Brown states he doubted gold would be found at depth, and was generally very dismissive of the mine. Its share price collapsed.

The lode is 10-20 metres wide with quartz veins along a length of 90 metres, dipping 35-45 degrees north. The veins pinch and swell. The quartz is milky white, locally ferruginous, with minor pyrite found below the weathered zone under 12 metres from the surface. In the upper oxidised areas is boxworks carrying minor gold. Later assessments stated economic grades of gold would only be found in the upper 15 metres from the surface.
