Phosphate mining on Banaba Island started in 1900 and was completed in 1979.

Phosphate extracted from Banaba Island was estimated at 20 million tonnes.

In 2009, SOPAC (South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission) conducted an assessment of the phosphate remnants on Banaba.
