The city of Massa is the administrative centre of the province of Massa-Carrara. The Frigido valley, drained by River Frigido, is located to the northeast of Massa and hosts the second most important marble district of the Apuan Alps, after the adjacent Carrara area (http://www.mindat.org/loc-2147.html).

In 1929, the municipalities of Massa, Carrara, and Montignoso were merged in a single municipality, called Apuania. In 1945, the previous situation was restored.

The Massa marble district is subdivided into eight quarrying basins. From west to east these basins are conventionally named the Brugiana, Saineto valley (Rocchetta), Gioia-Casette, Canale del Fondone, Canale di Cerignano, Resceto valley, Renara-Taneta valley, and Madielle basins. The Massa basins involve different tectonic units (Massa and Apuan Units) and some geological structures like southern Carrara syncline, Orto di Donna syncline, and minor plicative structures of Vinca-Forno anticline hinge zone, named Madielle and Focoraccia (Capraia) syncline.
