The Arapiraca Copper-Gold-Iron deposit is located about 15 km NW of Arapiraca city (population about 170,000) in Craíbas municipality, state of Alagoas. This deposit was discovered at a single outcrop of magnetitite (a rock composed primarily of magnetite), followed by an extensive coring program designed to determine details about all rock types in the area and their depths, areal extents, minerals present, and the value of their chemical components including especially gold and copper.

In April 2012, estimated reserves were 85.5 tonnes of raw ore at a grade of 0.52% copper, 0.10% gold, and 7.38% magnetite. The ore would be processed to yield copper and gold, with no decision yet as to whether the iron will be smelted. An open-pit mine, to be called the Serrote da Laje mine, is planned. As of 2017, however, the project is still awaiting financing. At least 18 minerals have been specified in the cores, but the rock types listed imply the presence of other minerals as well.

This deposit is an easterly extension of a mineralization belt called Carajás Province. That belt is best developed in the state of Pará, and includes world-class IOCG (Iron Oxide-Copper-Gold) deposits. The degree of similarity among the various separate ore bodies is uncertain at this time, however. At Arapiraca, the ores are hosted in granitic rocks metamorphosed to high grade (granulites) that contain lenticular bodies of ultramafics. Ores at Arapiraca include pyrite and pyrrhotite layered with gabbro, massive magnetite, plus disseminated gold, bornite, and chalcopyrite.
