Historic gold mine. The country rock is pumiceous rhyolite tuff, hosting oxidised, abundant pyrite, rubbly quartz reefs with sparse Au-Ag. The Footwall of the reef is well defined, dipping 45 degrees south, while the Hanging Wall gradually merges with the country rock. The reef is described as segregated vein formations, and lenticular pipes within mineralised breccia bands, with erratic mineralisation.
The deposit was discovered by McIsaac and Meickle (spelt variously in the newspapers) above the head waters of the Kapowai River, two kilometres east of the Welcome Jack Mine, and about 15 kilometres south of Coroglen. The Mindat co-ordinates are very approximate, with no clear access into this thickly forested rugged area.
The Kapowai Gold Mining Company operated the mine between 1899-1903, then Michael O'Connor 1903-1906. The mine has produced 4182 tonnes of ore yielding 3408 ounces of gold. The mine contained an eight stamp battery, 2 adits, and a shaft to 133 feet deep. O'Connor formed another Kapowai Gold Mining Company in 1906, and activity by the company was found until 1911.
Meanwhile in 1899, George Lindsay and Henry Brett had registered the Golden Reefs and Perseverence claims. The Kapowai company amalgamated the Golden Reefs, Perseverence, and Kapowai claims, and appointed George Lindsay as mine manager.
The Kapowai Amalgamated Gold Mines Limited took 77 tonnes of ore out yielding 52 ounces after three weeks work in 1933. The following year the company was wound up, having exhausted its funds.
