In this area there are many occurrences of andesitic and basaltic effusions (and trachytes too) which interested this part of Sardinia from Oligocene. In many altered rocks within a large area around Villanova Monteleone - Monteleone Rocca Doria there are very interesting mineral occurrences.

Local best sites are:

1) Near "Bena e Luna" locality, on the right side of the road that leads from Villanova village to Monteleone Rocca Doria, about 1.5 km after the Villanova town cemetery. Heulandite and tridymite have been found here.

2) Monte Giuargada, on the right side of the road that leads from Villanova village to Monteleone Rocca Doria, about 2 km after the Villanova town cemetery, starts a pathway that leads to the mountain. After 1 km along this path, there are reddish basaltic rocks with mineralized veins, basically rich of heulandite.

3) Abandoned quarry on the right side of Villanova-Monteleone Rocca Doria, about 5 km after Villanova. Reddish basaltic rocks vith heulandite crystals, also of great size.
