Moscow, the capital and most popolous city of Russia, is situated on the on the banks of the Moskva River. The elevation of Moscow at the All-Russia Exhibition Center (VVC), where the leading Moscow weather station is situated, is 156 metres; Teplostanskaya highland is the city's highest point at 255 metres. It is a federal city (or city of federal importance), having the special status of both city and separate federal subject of the Russian Federation.

The Moscow Ring Road often called MKAD (acronym word for Russian Moskovskaya Kol'tsevaya Avtomobil'naya Doroga [Московская Кольцевая Автомобильная Дорога]), whose length is 108.9 km, served as the administrative boundary of Moscow city since 1960. From the 1980s Moscow started annexing territory outside the beltway, such as Solntsevo, Butovo, and the town of Zelenograd. A part of Moscow Oblast's territory was merged into Moscow on July 1, 2012; as a result, Moscow is no longer fully surrounded by Moscow Oblast and now also has a border with Kaluga Oblast. The city of Moscow is presently divided into twelve administrative okrugs and 123 districts.

A cadastre of minerals, their varieties, and mineral formations covering the territory of the city within the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) has been recently compiled by Pekin (2010 and 2011).
