The Mount Isa terrane of NW Queensland comprises lower to middle Proterozoic sediments, bimodal volcanic rocks, and plutons that record multiple periods of intracontinental rifting, crustal shortening, and metamorphism.

The three structural belts that make up the inlier display distinctive stratigraphic sequences and deformational styles. The central Kalkadoon – Leichhardt Belt is made up of granitic rocks of the Kalkadoon and Ewen Batholiths, which intruded crystalline basement between ca 1870 and 1840 Ma. The Western and Eastern Fold Belts consist of thick sequences of younger sedimentary and bimodal volcanic rocks that accumulated during multiple phases of intracontinental rifting and basin development between 1800 and 1595 Ma. [1]
