Kuran wa Munjan District is a district of Badakhshan Province in eastern Afghanistan, located in the Hindu Kush mountains. The district's administrative center is Kuran wa Munjan.

The district is in the southwest corner of the province and is bordered on its northeast side by the Jurm and Zebak Districts. Most of the district's boundaries are adjacent to other Afghan provinces, but a very small section on the eastern edge of the district lies on the international border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Description: Analysis in 2015 by Anatoly Kasatkin found required Cs was below detection limits. See: http://www.mindat.org/forum.php?read,9,351661,351661,quote=1 This means that there are no Cs beryls here, but there is alkali containing beryl. From the above message thread,"an email from Dr. Pezzotta and Rob Lavinsky from the 2012 finds in Deo Darrah... and Pezzotta mentioned detecting the alkali metal elements Na and K, but not notable Cs in the periphery of the crystals." The 2015 results debunk the vorobyevite claim but do not mention any other alkali metals.

'Hackmanite'

Habit: Crude to sharp dodecahedra with trapezohedral modifications
Colour: clear, white, grey, green, lilac, purple
Fluorescence: In Long Wave UV: yellow orange, pink, white
Description: These are some of the best Hackmanites ever found and show a variety of optical properties, such as darkening in the dark after bleaching in Yellow light, Reversible Photochromism (tenebrescence)with UV irradiation and yellow light. The grey sodalites contain significant K.

Hambergite

Habit: Large dodecahedra to several cm
Colour: Dark blue , blue, dark green, light green
Fluorescence: Orangey brown in long-wave UV light.
Description: The blue haüyne has a cell edge of 9.08 A (Fernando Camera, priv. comm. 2013) and the green one 9.05 A (Fernando Camera, priv. comm. 2010). Both have similar modulated structures. A few dozen specimens of green haüyne were recovered. Dudley Blauwet (2008) has photos of the material in situ. Fewer darker green haüynes later emerged. PXRD at the Royal Ontario museum gave Lazurite-C with gypsum for the early green material (Malcolm Back, priv. comm. 2009). Fernando Camara (2010) found it has a cubic cell edge of 9.05 A and a 45 A modulated structure. A Raman analysis at the University of Arizona gave both haüyne and lazurite for the blue hauyne. The problem is that no natural sulfide-dominant lazurite has ever been observed. Such material can be synthesized but is unstable. All 'lazurite' specimens is actually sulfate-dominant haüyne. The specious argument to call some PXRD-analyse samples lazurite stems from the observation that sulfide is smaller than sulfate and so haüynes with small unit cells should have more sulfide, but there is never enough to be sulfide dominant. Furthemore, contents of impurity elements such a K influence the cell parameter.

Description: The x-rays suggest Nosean, Lazurite or Hauyne, but EDS shows the blue specs to be nosean (contains no Ca like Lazurite or Hauyne) These 0.1 micron specs are at the current limit of single xl XRD. The nosean is exsolved from a 100 micron layer of clear sodalite. This exsolution has been observed in synthetic materials (Van Peteghen et al 1963). This clear sodalite coats and is not in epitaxi with cm sized greasy grey nepheline xls.

Fluorescence: none
Description: Frank Hawthorne identified this pargasite. Green "colour change lazurites" (green Hauyne) being replaced by zeolite occur with large pargasite xls. Thus the pargasite has been assigned to this locality.

Description: A Rob Lavisnky specimen from "Kokcha Valley". Work done on these amphoiboles indicates that they are K and F rich richterites, but generally not meeting the criteria for potassic-richterite, fluoro-richterite or ptassic-fluoro-richterite. This does not preclude the occurrence of potassic-fluoro-richterite at Sar-e Sang.

Description: Marialite is the only confirmed (PXRD) Scapolite from here. The surviving marialite is bright yellow under long wave UV. However, these scapolites are altering to Orthoclase which does not fluoresce. Some of these orthoclase pseudomorphs after scapolite are quite blue. Because this is from Sar-e-Sang, one immediately thinks this due to a blue feldspathoid. If this feldspathoid exists it is below the detection limits of PXRD and EDS. Apparently tiny Fe impurities can turn feldspar blue http://www.mindat.org/mesg-105-318134.html

Colour: The colours range from colourless , to grey, to yellow, to green, to lilac, to purple. The colorless to lilac and purple are photochromic.
Fluorescence: The best fluorescence is under long wave. The grey sodalite has the typical yellow disulfide fluorescence under long wave.
Description: The largest and best sodalite xls to 5 cm were found here
