Høvringsvatnet is the name of an idyllic lake 9 km NE of Evje in the Evje og Hornnes municipality.

The lake is located more or less in the middle of a granite/monzonite intrusion.

It was long thought that this intrusion was the source of the pegmatites for which the Evje-Iveland area is famous.

However, the age difference between the intrusion (983 +/- 4 and 980 +/- 4 Ma) and the pegmatites (ca. 915 Ma) is way too large for this to be possible.

New information, however, suggests that the pegmatite in which the Åvesland 4 quarry is located, is of considerable older date than so far assumed.

A study by Deniz Öz (2018) at the University in Bonn has revealed that this pegmatite is in the range of 964 +/- 20 Ma and 981 +/- 10 Ma.

This would place this pegmatite well within the time frame for the formation of the Høvringsvatnet intrusion.

This intrusion itself is not known for the presence of interesting mineral occurrences within its borders, but fluorite and molybdenite have been observed.
