The Siskowit Mine began operations in Isle Royale as early as 1845 under the ownership of Isle Royale Union Mining Company. After that venture failed, the Siskowit Mining Association was formed in 1847 by Charles Whittlesey who began sinking a shaft and drifting out. The new company continued previous work on an epidote lode five feet wide tat held large sheets of copper. Some copper was sent to the smelter at Ransom Mine, but was badly smelted and only a little over 2,000 pounds of useless copper was produced. In 1848, workers planned to dig an adit to assist in draining the mine to save money. By autumn, work was suspended.
The mine was reorganized in 1849 as The Siskowit Mining Company of Michigan and resumed work by the Association. The new company also worked a location near McCargo Cove. In 1850, the company reported 6,800 pounds of barrel and mass copper that was shipped to Baltimore for processing. In addition, two additional shafts were also sunk and a steam engine was brought onsite to power dewatering pumps and a stamp mill. In 1852, over 80,000 pounds of copper was shipped for smelting. For reasons unknown, the mine closed in 1855 after producing a total of 150 tons of copper over a ten year period. In all, a total of seven shafts and an adit were dug.
The minesite is easily accessed with plenty of ruins to observe. Some tailings piles are also onsite, but collecting is strictly forbidden.
Development: First tried mott island, then to mccargo cove area, abandoned 1849, then mined south of rock harbor after 1850.
