Formally Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region (Región del Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins).

This department was formerly called the Department of Rancagua. It was changed to O'Higgins in 1883.

Some older texts, such as The System of Mineralogy of James Dwight Dana refer to the Department of Rancagua as a locality.
