A continent that is essentially covered by ice with scattered rock outcrops and mountain exposures. Because of the contrast, loose rocks on the ice are carefully examined as they may be meteorites. Antarctica is well known for its numerous meteorite localities. Stewart (1951) noted that "167 mineral species, subspecies, and varieties, as well as those of questionable occurrence, have been reported from Antarctica" and he provided a list and bibliography.
