Deposit: NaCl forms a thickcrust in a central area of about 9 square miles

Development: A large amount of salt was produced from the marsh between 1861 & 1868, and shipped to silver-ore mills in virginia city and elsewhere. This would have been theearliest commercial source of salt ain nevada. The railroad valley co., searching for potash, drilled 3 holes in the marsh in 1912. In 1917, fallon group formedthe nevada potash synddicate in an attempt to extract potash from the brines, but the venture proved unsuccessful.
