A former Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu-Mn-W-limestone + Bi-As-Au (traces) occurrence/mine located in sec. 23, T5S, R4W, SLM, 0.6 km (0.4 mile) NNW of Ophir (town) and 1.2 km (0.8 mile) E of Dry Mountain (coordinates of record), on private (patented) land. Discovered in 1864. Operated during the period 1870-1972. Owned by U. V. Industries (U.S. Smelting, Refining and Mining Co.), Salt Lake City, Utah 84111. Operated by McFarland and Hullinger, Tooele, Utah. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Mine closed when the Midvale custom mill closed.

NOTE: MRDS file notation: "Record numbers DC12228, 12204 and 12201 probably all refer to this mine.

Mineralization is a replacement polymetallic deposit (Model code: 72; USGS model code: 19a; deposit model name: Polymetallic replacement; Mark3 model number: 47), hosted in Pliocene-Late Cambrian limestone of the Ophir unit. The mineralized ground is wedge-shaped The ore body(ies) strike N60W to N75W and dip 15NE to 20NE at a thickness of 45 meters, width of 426.72 meters and a length of 762 meters. Ore body No. 1 is a replacement tabular body and ore body No. 2 is pipe-like. The primary mode of origin was hydrothermal and the secondary mode was oxidation. Primary ore control was faulting and the secondary mode was lithology (limestone horizons of the Ophir Formation, especially with the Copper and Blue vein, less so in the Middle and Big veins. Wallrock alteration is moderate (propylitic, pyritization). A NW-trending rhyolite dike (Sacramento Dike) occurs W of the mine. Two small kersantite dikes are also in the area. Mineralization is post-faulting. Local alteration includes silicification. Local rocks include Middle Cambrian shale and carbonate rocks in central Utah and/or Mississippian (2) sedimentary rocks in central Utah.

Regional geologic structures include the Ophir anticline. Local structures include a wedge-shaped block bounded by the Canyon Fault o the S, the Cliff Fault on the NW, and the All Red Fissure on the NE.

Workings include underground openings with a length of 7,500 meters and an overall depth of 426.72 meters. There are many thousands of feet of workings. The main entance is on the 1,000 level. A 2,400 foot long drainage tunnel portal is W of Ophir and drains 200 gallons per minute.

Production information: Production during the period 1870-1926 was valued at $15 to 20 million (period values). Three shipments of scheelite ore in 1954 and 1955 assayed 0.34% WO3 and 0.42% WO3.

Reserves and resources: Type: In-situ; demonstrated: 22,675 metric tons of ore.

Analytical data results: Tenor of ore in later years: 1.3% Cu; 5.5-6.0% Pb; 6 to 7 ounces Ag; 4-8% Zn; 12% Fe.
