Central section of a roughly east-to-west running mountain range separating the Penninic rocks of the Hohe Tauern to the north from the Central Alpine Permomesozoic rocks of the Gailtaler Alpen to the south. The rocks of the Kreuzeck group belong to the alpine 'Altkristallin'. To the west and the southeast, it is adjoined by the Schober and Goldeck groups, respectively.

Some sulphide deposits are known in this mountain group.
