The western section of a roughly east-to-west running mountain range separating the Penninic rocks of the Hohe Tauern to the north from the Central Alpine Permomesozoic rocks of the Gailtaler Alpen to the south. The rocks of the Schober group belong to the Alpine 'Altkristallin'. To the west, the Schober group extends into East Tyrol. To the southeast, it is adjoined by the Kreuzeck group.
