The Mount Biggenden deposit was discovered in 1890 because of it's large ironstone outcrop. Gold and bismuth were extracted intermittently by shallow underground mining from 1890 to 1912, with gold the primary product from 1890 to 1901 and bismuth thereafter to 1912.

The mine reopened as the Mt Biggenden Bismuth Mine in 1934 and was worked through to 1938. Over 186kg of gold and 203t are known to have been produced between 1890 and 1938, but these figures are probably understated.

In 1966 Commercial Minerals Pty Ltd began open cut mining of the magnetite lenses for crushing and use in coal washing, with bismuth the main flotation byproduct of the non-magnetic fraction. The mine extended underground by decline access down to the 10 Level, before finally being officially closed in July 1999. The underground stopes collapsed soon afterwards and propagated up to a 'glory hole' at the surface, which soon filled with groundwater. Since that time the mine passed into private ownership and has been operated as a successful quarry providing crushed gravel for road surfacing and construction etc, initially accessing material from the large old mullock waste dumps and more recently by blasting fresh material.

The Biggenden deposit is a significant skarn deposit formed at the contact between the Degilbo Granodiorite and the calc-silicate Biggenden Beds. Economic minerals mined here since 1890 are magnetite, bismuthinite, native bismuth, gold and chalcopyrite.

Numerous crystal-lined fissures and vugs were encountered during underground mining, some as long as 20m that 'a man could walk into' (pers comm), with calcite, siderite, magnetite and quartz the dominant crystals lining the walls, however rarely selenite and a host of other minerals were also seen. Encountering a new vug during underground development was a very common experience (pers comm).

An enlightened policy by mine management from 1966 to 1999 saw miners officially allowed to extract mineral specimens and give them away or sell them to mineral collectors who often gathered at the mine car park to see what had been uncovered. Many Australian mineral collectors and gem clubs have fond memories of visits to the car park over the years, obtaining some spectacular specimens that would have otherwise been lost to the mullock dump or treatment plant. The mine yielded world-class terminated bismuthinite crystal specimens which are highly sought today but rare, along with a wide range of other well-crystallised species, notably carbonates.

It should be noted that the North Burnett Region was created in 2007 with the merger of the Shires of Biggenden, Eidsvold, Gayndah, Monto, Mundubbera and Perry.
