One of several emerald open pit mines in the northern zone of the Mananjary emerald mining district (Cheilletz et al. 2001).
The emerald mineralisation occurs within phlogopitite developed at the contact between pegmatite and basic/ultrabasic rocks, characterised by reactions zones at the contact with serpentinite.
